The UK and US have established a landmark trade agreement that will keep zero tariffs on UK medicine shipments going into the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to raise funding on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This commitment ensures that import taxes on these crucial products will be held at zero for a duration of three years.

This development comes after recent statements to hike duties on branded pharmaceutical imports, with figures mentioned reaching one hundred percent.

"This deal with the United Kingdom strengthens the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and brings long-overdue fairness to transatlantic drug exports," an announcement noted.

Trade Importance

Medicines are one of the Britain's largest export categories to the America, which is clearly the largest market for leading UK drugmakers.

Trade data show that in the one-year period prior to the third quarter, the UK sold drugs worth billions to the US. This figure made up a significant portion of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee secures jobs, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a international leader for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Detailed NHS Changes

The agreement involves several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it deems new treatments to be prohibitively costly by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to increase overall health service expenditure on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Rebate Cap: The sum drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. In the past, rebates were more than twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The pact comes amid a ongoing tension between the drug companies and the ministers over drug pricing and regulatory access.

These tensions were intensified by assertions that US consumers were paying significantly more for the same drugs than consumers in the other developed nations.

Recently, several large drug company projects in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar funding commitments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS must invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a proportion of its overall budget over the past decade.
